Jewellery Care Guide
A little everyday care can help you enjoy your jewellery for longer. Use this guide as a gentle starting point, and always follow the care instructions supplied with your individual piece. If those instructions differ from this guide, follow the supplier’s advice.
Everyday care
- Put jewellery on after applying perfume, lotions, sunscreen and hair products, allowing them to dry first.
- As a precaution, remove jewellery before swimming, showering, exercising, sleeping or using household cleaners, unless the supplier’s instructions specifically advise otherwise.
- Handle chains and clasps gently. Avoid pulling, snagging or repeatedly bending adjustable designs.
- Store pieces separately in soft pouches or lined compartments to reduce tangling and scratches. Keep them away from damp, direct sunlight and excessive heat.
Gold-plated jewellery and gold vermeil
Gold plating and vermeil have a surface layer of gold that can wear over time. Treat the finish gently: wipe with a clean, soft, non-abrasive cloth after wear. Avoid abrasive polishing cloths, metal polish, chemical dips and vigorous rubbing unless the supplier specifically recommends them for the piece.
Do not assume that a plated piece can be soaked or scrubbed. PVD-plated designs may have different care instructions, so check the individual product details rather than treating all gold-coloured finishes alike.
Sterling silver and plated silver
For an unplated sterling silver piece, use a cleaning method recommended by its supplier. Rhodium-plated, platinum-plated and gold-plated silver need care appropriate to their surface finish, not just the silver underneath.
Start with a gentle wipe using a soft cloth. Avoid silver dips and polishing compounds on plated pieces, pearls, enamel or mixed-material designs unless explicitly approved for that item.
Freshwater and baroque pearls
Keep pearls away from perfume, household chemicals and abrasive surfaces. After wear, gently wipe them with a soft cloth. If needed and permitted by the supplier, use a lightly dampened cloth, then allow the piece to dry fully before storing it.
Do not soak pearl jewellery or use ultrasonic or steam cleaners. Store pearls separately from harder stones and metal edges that could scratch them.
Moissanite, zirconia and other stone-set designs
Choose cleaning methods for the whole piece, including its metal finish, settings and any other materials, not just the stone. A soft cloth is the safest starting point. Before using water, soap or a brush, check that the supplier recommends it for that specific design.
Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning unless the supplier or a qualified jeweller confirms the complete piece is suitable. Stop wearing a piece if a stone or setting becomes loose, and seek advice before cleaning or wearing it again.
Enamel, glass and mixed materials
Protect enamel, glass, resin and imitation pearls from knocks, strong chemicals and abrasive cleaning. Wipe gently with a soft cloth and avoid soaking unless the supplier confirms it is suitable. When a piece combines materials, follow the care requirements of its most delicate component.
